Over 50% of the world's soils are deficient in micronutrients, which not only directly decreases crop yields and quality but also indirectly causes deficiencies in certain essential micronutrients (such as iron and zinc) in human diets, resulting in diseases such as anemia, heart disease, or neurological damage and thus, a "hidden hunger" problem for human beings. In 1975, Professor Yunhua Wang from Huazhong Agricultural University discovered that boron deficiency caused cotton to "bud but not flower" for the first time in Xinzhou County, Hubei Province. This marked the start of micronutrient research at Huazhong Agricultural University. Over the past 50 years, research on micronutrient and its application has flourished both domestically and internationally and achieved significant results.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of micronutrient research and to build an international platform for innovation and exchange in crop micronutrient research, Huazhong Agricultural University will host the “International Symposium on Micronutrients in Crops” in Wuhan, Hubei Province, from November 14 to 17, 2025. The symposium will review and summarize recent innovative achievements in crop micronutrient research, discuss new ideas for the green development of micronutrient fertilizer industries, and integrate resources from industry, academia, and research both domestically and internationally to empower agriculture in the new era.
